Bleeding out is a status effect in XCOM 2

Causes[]

Bleeding Out triggers when an XCOM Soldier's HP reaches 0, the chances of that happening instead of dying depends on the soldier's will in the base game (1% chance for every point of will over 50, or 2% with the Stay with me GTS upgrade)

Effects[]

  • The affected unit is unable to take actions
  • A 4-turn timer appears above the soldier, the soldier will die if you allow the timer to run out
  • Like dead or unconscious soldiers, bleeding out soldiers can be carried and evacuated by another unit
  • Removes most status effects when triggered (Such as Marked, Disoriented, Mind controlled or even Acid burn)

Curing[]

  • Bleeding out units can be stabilized by Medikits or a Specialist's medical protocol, this puts them unconscious with 1 HP
  • Completing the mission before the bleed out timer runs out will save any bleeding out soldiers (Unless the mission requires you to evac to complete it, like council missions or the ADVENT Forge assault)
  • Evacuating the bleeding out unit by carrying them before they die

Trivia[]

  • Also exists in multiplayer
  • Cannot be triggered if affected by chryssalid poison
  • As will was reworked in War of the Chosen, this mechanic was reworked as well, Chosen (notably the Hunter) have a very high chance to cause bleed out instead of outright death
  • Evacuating a bleeding out soldier grants the "Nick of time" achievement
  • ADVENT, alien units and civilians cannot be bleeding out, strangely enough despite being former ADVENT soldiers, Skirmishers can bleed out instead of being killed
