Alien autopsies can be conducted in the Research Labs by Dr. Vahlen (after Xeno-biology has been researched in XCOM: Enemy Within). They provide insight into the aliens' physiology and the most effective means for XCOM to combat them. Autopsies become available as the corpses of a newly encountered aliens are recovered. Autopsies can unlock new items, aircraft armament modules, facilities, and Foundry projects as well as valuable research credits.
