Cover is a game mechanic in XCOM 2.

There are two types of cover:

  • Low Cover: increases Defense by 20.
  • High Cover: increases Defense by 40.

Notes[]

  • Hunker Down additionally increases Defense by 30 and grants 50 Dodge.
  • SPARK's Bulwark ability provides High Cover to all adjacent units.
  • W.A.R. Suit's Shieldwall ability provides High Cover to all adjacent units, but is cancelled if the armor wearer moves or attacks.
  • Enemy units Andromedon Shell, Gatekeeper, Sectopod destroy environmental objects, including cover, when they move through them. SPARK's Wrecking Ball ability grants similar property.
  • Grenadier's Demolition ability specifically tries to damage and destroy cover, whichever enemy is using it.
  • Cover is important for Concealment ambushes.
  • Some units cannot benefit from a cover, e.g. SPARK. Units unable to benefit from cover cannot be flanked.
  • Some covers are more sturdy and cannot be outright destroyed by conventional weapons or weak explosion grenades. Not all grenades damage cover.

Tips[]

  • Avoid placing units in situations where collateral environment damage can cause harm, such as when elevated or behind explosive cover.
