Stat Growth in XCOM: Enemy Unknown is predefined for a soldier's HP and Aim as they gain ranks based on their class. The standard stat growth can be altered by the following Second Wave options:

Soldiers also gain a randomized Will bonus for each rank (see table, below). Will can be lost if a soldier is critically wounded unless they have the Secondary Heart gene mod.

Stat increases from promotions are calculated at the end of a mission, not from leveling up a soldier's abilities, so keep this in mind when purchasing Iron Will. In addition, Shaojie Zhang, Annette Durand, and the Furies all have set stats upon recruitment, but subsequent promotions are still affected by the upgrade's increased range of Will.
