Chryssalids do panic. They back off few tiles. But as soon as your turn finishes, the panic goes away and they get to attack. Not only that, but the flamethrower doesn't automatically hit highlighted targets. That's right, I had three chrysallids right in front of my mec, no cover between them, I manage to hit only one, the one on the mec right. The others didn't care about the napalm poured on them. The result of this crappy flamethrower: a dead major, a dead captain, a retreat from a terror attack after killing 17 enemies between chrysallids and zombies and India out of the organization, with Australia and China in panic (the kind of panic that does not go away when YOUR BLOODY TURN BEGINS). Always go kinetic strike module. ALWAYS.--Damx (talk) 10:29, March 8, 2015 (UTC)

Why Hello there! :)
Sorry for your troop and member loss. Whatever your reasons are, I'll now add mine too. I'll speak more freely here cause this is no wikia page only a talk page.
KSM is unfortunately always superior to the Flamethrower, because dealing 6 or 9 damage is not too much when you need extra strategic planning to align 2 or 3 individuals in it's area of effect! When hostiles are activated they take action depending on their weapon. If they have ranged weapons, they tend to take cover first, making flamethrower targeting variably harder. If they have melee attacks, then you have better chance to target them, but it is unadvised to let 2 or 3 melee attackers into your close proximity. Not to mention that 6 or 9 is quite low damage.
The result is: KSM always, especially because it goes well with Electro Pulse.
As a retrospective, the flamethrower arrives too late in the campaign and should have been a weapon associated with Carapace armor instead, which has no tactical advantages.
PS: I might just write some fan fiction game mod concepts dealing with changing the properties of armors and thus adding new abilities like this. Any ideas where I might be able to post them?
Best wishes

In general I agree that the Flamerthrower generally loses out to the KSM in functionality; I feel this is particularly due its limited number of uses and its poor damage scaling against mid-to-late game enemies. That said, if acquired early on in the game, the Flamethrower can be used to pretty devastating effect.
Regarding "fan fiction" or just general theorectial improvements/changes to the game, I would suggest going with a blog post. Monkeybite (talk) 03:03, March 9, 2015 (UTC)
