  • Did you know that Wikia offers apps for many of our most popular communities? They're a more convenient way of reading your articles on mobile. Just in time for the launch this week, XCOM now has a community app, too! You can download it at the Apple App Store for iPhone and at the Google Play Store for Android.

Recently, we've added our new feature "Discussions" to many of our apps that lets mobile viewers discuss the game directly in the app as well! We've been amazed by how many users have given Discussions a try - many new users have even signed up for an account just so they can participate in Discussions in their respective apps. We're sure your community will see a surge in new sign-ups through the app as well in the coming weeks.

Some of these new community members might even go beyond Discussions, add content to your articles, and stick around as valuable editors.

You can read and post to Discussions on the web as well: XCOM Discussions on the web. This web version isn’t "discoverable" right now, meaning it isn't linked anywhere on your wikia. You can only find it through a URL shared from the app, or by following the link here. You can participate in Discussions with or without using the app. Since the app was just launched, there aren't many conversations in Discussions yet, but we're sure that will change soon.

If you like what you see, what do you think about adding a link to the Discussions web version to your community's navigation? Other communities that have had an app with Discussions for a bit longer have already done this, for example Brave Frontier and Battlefront.

Moderation features: Just in the last couple of weeks, we've also added features to Discussions that allow your mods and admins to delete/restore posts, in the app as well as on the desktop version. You can also view all posts by a user, and admins can delete all posts by a user (very useful, of course, if you're dealing with a spammer). We're also planning to add a "close discussion" option for mods, and an option for regular users to flag a post as inappropriate. That last one will be exciting, because it's something we currently don't even have on Wikia's regular forums!

Your XCOM mods can now moderate Discussions much like they already moderate conversations on the wikia itself. Having good moderation in Discussions will help create a very positive impression of your community with those who are only familiar with the app - this is a great opportunity to attract new editors for the desktop community as well!

If you're not planning on using Discussions yourself, you could later check to see if any of the app users seem suitable for that role, once conversations in the app have picked up. If anyone sticks out, you can assign these new app mods to the discussion moderator group to give them the necessary rights. Maybe there are even users among the current desktop community who'd like to become active in Discussions and help moderate?

Right now, it's a bit challenging to message app moderation candidates directly. The app users don’t always confirm their email addresses, and so won’t get notified about Message Wall posts. But if you spot someone you'd like to contact about the moderator role, let Wikia staff know, and we'll help you contact them!

Let us know what you think! We're still working on adding more features to make Discussions more fun and convenient to use (such as topic categorization, search, link previews, etc.) For that, we can really use your opinion. How do you like Discussions? What's better than the current desktop forum, what's worse? What are you missing? Please share your thoughts here, and if you have questions, I'm happy to answer them!
