The XCOM 2 campaign covers the events of the War for Liberation, when XCOM rescues the Commander and leads resistance forces in a war to overthrow the occupying ADVENT world government. The campaign's gameplay involves recruiting and training soldiers, sending squads on turn-based tactical combat missions, researching technology, and upgrading soldier equipment and the mobile Avenger base.

Xcom2 objectives

Campaign objectives are displayed on the Geoscape

The player must take specific actions to progress the campaign, including research projects, completing key mission objectives, and building Avenger facilities. Objectives currently required to progress the campaign are marked with the symbol of a star inside a hexagon (Xcom2 objective) and tracked on the Avenger's "ant farm" and Geoscape views. The key objectives remain constant across playthroughs, but each campaign plays out uniquely due to the large amount of randomized and procedurally generated content and the lack of restrictions on the order of completing objectives.

The campaign has a time limit tracked by the Avatar Project progress meter. The progress meter can be increased and decreased by various events. If the Avatar Project progresses to completion, the player loses the campaign.

The campaign can be set to four difficulty levels which affect a large number of game parameters. The game can be played in Ironman mode at all difficulty levels, with manual saving disabled and the campaign's progress stored on one auto-saving game file.

The campaign's storyline and gameplay are expanded with the DLC releases Anarchy's Children, Shen's Last Gift, War of the Chosen, and the Tactical Legacy Pack.

The campaign is officially playable in single player only, although players have been able to improvise co-op gameplay using modding[1] and Parsec.[2]
